The Fight for Endangered Languages with Ross Perlin and Mary Linn

Thursday, April 11, 2024 | 6:30 p.m.

$5 | Friedman Family Auditorium

Join Planet Word in an exploration of the intricate tapestry of languages shaping the cultural landscape of New York City and beyond! Accomplished Linguist, Ross Perlin, author of Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York, will be in conversation with Mary Linn, Linguist and Curator of Cultural and Linguistic Revitalization at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

In particular, Perlin will highlight six unsung heroes profiled in his book, people who navigated the challenge of life in New York while remaining dedicated to safeguarding endangered and Indigenous languages. Perlin and Linn will talk about the challenges and triumphs of language revitalization efforts and some of the successful, innovative strategies they’ve come across for documentation, policy making, and curriculum development.

The evening promises to be an illuminating journey through the conservation and revitalization of endangered languages in the most linguistically diverse city in the history of the world.
