Film Screening: You Resemble Me with Director Dina Amer
Wednesday, October 11, 2023 | 6:30 p.m.
$20 | Friedman Family Auditorium
Join us for a screening of the searing, 90-minute, multiple-award-winning film You Resemble Me (English subtitles, in French and Arabic). Tracing the early life of the young French-Moroccan woman who was falsely accused of being Europe’s first female suicide bomber, the film reveals many uncomfortable truths about alienation and radicalization and how words are too often used to divide us. Pieced together from over 300 interviews, we’ll learn the true story of how Hasna Ait Boulahcen came to be at the site of the Bataclan Theater bombing in Paris. Released in 2021, You Resemble Me was Amer’s directorial debut. The film won 33 awards and premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
After the screening, Amer and New York Times columnist Tom Friedman will have a conversation about her journey from working as a junior reporter in the Cairo bureau of the Times to working as a translator for Tom during the 2011 Tahrir Square democracy uprising to becoming a successful first-time scriptwriter and film director. Amer’s interest in words, language, truth and miscommunications, comes through in every facet of her work, career, and fascinating film.
Join us before the screening for light bites and drinks.
