Eyes on Reading: Turning the Science of Reading into Classroom Practice

Saturday, April 25, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

$15.00 | Friedman Family Auditorium

Join Emily Hanford and language and literacy expert Dr. Tiffany Hogan for a conversation about what the science of reading tells us about the role of language in reading development. Hogan will share insights from her work translating research into real-world instruction and what it takes to help schools put the science of reading to work for students.

Research on how children learn to read points to two essential skills: the ability to turn printed letters into spoken words and the ability to understand the meaning those words convey. For decades, debates about reading instruction have focused on which skill matters more. The evidence is clear: both are critical.

But knowing what research says and putting that knowledge into practice in classrooms are two very different challenges. Learn why it can take years for research findings to be incorporated into everyday teaching practice.

Following the presentation, Emily Hanford, Planet Word’s Journalist-in-Residence, will join Dr. Hogan on stage for a conversation and audience Q&A. Program tickets also include access to a networking breakfast from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m.
