When “America’s Got Talent” aired a convincing but fake video of grouchy judge Simon Cowell dramatically singing opera, some viewers were delighted by the realism and others were alarmed by its potential misuse. Synthetic media — so-called deep fakes — are getting more sophisticated and harder to detect. They’re also getting easier to create without expensive studio equipment. With the democratization of the ability to create synthetic media, how are we to distinguish truth from fiction?
