For the last 5 years, Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) has been tracking how more than 5,000 Americans react to 21 emotive words about America and democracy. Words such as “community” or “racial equality” or “freedom” elicit strong but sometimes diametrically opposed reactions. It turns out, the words we use to talk about politics and civics reflect some of the same divisions we are seeing in our communities and in our national discourse. Join Planet Word and PACE for a provocative online presentation about how the words we choose shape our messages and reach — or turn off — our intended audiences.
